In Search of Better Stories

My Head is the Size of a Small Planetoid!

Life has hard patches. Work for me isn’t always the easiest. I see things and experience things that are challenging. The home front is no picnic either, with ED, that blasted eating disorder, still wreaking havoc in our family. However, we are much better than we were.

That’s why sometimes you need to get away. We slapped on our snow tires and headed east into the mountains, where there is a glorious abundance of that fluffy white stuff. It was time to throw away all our worries for one week and play. We played in the house: Bop It! Puzzles and silly games. We played outside: We built an igloo and slept in it. We went sledding, skiing, and snowboarding.

There was a dog at our place named Kruger. Wow, what a fantastic creature! I’ve been a cat man my whole life, but this dog sure put in a good word for his species. The dog simply loved being with us. He had no greater joy than to be in our presence, well that and maybe gulping up any crumbs that fell from the dinner table. I think I understand a little better about therapy dogs. Kruger was good for my soul!

The stillness of this little acreage on the side of a snowy hill was stunning. Absolute silence has a calming, healing effect on me. I found myself standing still on the trails and listening intently to nothing at all. In the mornings, I’d get up early and have to start up the wood fire to heat the house. Hot tea, a crackling fire, a nice chair and a chance to write, now that’s a great way to start a day. We visited old friends and smelled the crisp, clean mountain air. We were in awe of the mighty green trees now blanketed in pristine white. Their strong boughs bent low toward the earth weighed down with beauty.

This was what a holiday needs to be. Thanks, Mark and Shirley, for inviting us to house-sit while you were away. It was our joy to be there.
